Slat Sizes for Wood Blinds

Wood blinds, like most blinds, come in various different slat widths and each one is appropriate under different circumstances. In general, manufacturers create wood blinds in slat widths ranging from 1” to 3” and each type of wood blinds has benefits and drawbacks.

Wood blinds with 1” slats are great for shallow or small windows where a narrow slat would not only function better, but would better match the aesthetics of the room. These narrower slats are also ideal for windows near doors where blind widths might interfere with door handles. Keep in mind that more of these 1” slats are needed to cover a window and therefore take up more space when raised. When lowered and tilted open, 1” slats tend to create a “cluttered” look, since many slats are needed to cover the length of the window.

2” slats are the most popular wood blinds slat width. These moderately wide slats best represent traditional wood blinds and shutters, creating a nostalgic atmosphere of plantations and estates. Although narrower blinds work best on shallow windows, 2” slat wood blinds slats look great on almost any window regardless of depth or size. If you are unsure as to which slat width would work best for you, consider choosing a 2” slat that might work well on all your windows.

The widest wood blinds slats, those with 2 1/2” to 3” slats, work really well on large windows with views. These wide slats take up less space when tilted open and let you enjoy whatever view is outside your window. Wood blinds with wide slats also take up less space when raised to the top of your window, keeping your décor free of clutter and allowing you to enjoy every inch of space your window provides.
